I was reminded recently about a weird thing I used to do with our kids when we traveled in the car. I‟ve never heard of anyone else doing this, so I‟m sure that makes me the weirdest dad in the world. It made such an impression on my kids that they still bring it up today … and they are married with kids of their own. It was game we call “honkers”. Usually in the middle of nowhere and at an unsuspecting moment, I would honk the horn, play innocent, yell, “Look there goes a “honker”, did you see him?” I would repeat the “honking” several times during the trip. I think I forgot one time, honked the horn and scared some older lady half out of her wits.
When the kids were really young, they would look out the window trying to find the “honkers”. But, it didn‟t take long until the response became “Dad!!!!”
So what do “honkers” have to do with Tres Dias? I have always been intrigued by geese. I love it when they are migrating and flying high in sky in formation. I can hear the faint “honking”, look to the sky and usually see several formations of geese headed to their destinations. As I watch the geese, I can see them taking turns at the point of the formation. Sometimes the group gets too big and a group breaks off to begin another formation. I don‟t know how they know whose turn it is to head up the group … must be a command that sounds like “honk honk … it‟s your turn” … but goose slides right in to the point position and they continue on their journey.
Every year, Tres Dias has beautiful flights of formations take off during the spring and fall seasons. Rectors and Rectoras receive the call .“honk honk”.. and slide right into place. In 2011 we had teams that were led by Dale Dart, Susan Young, Terry Schultheis and Sallie Boyer. During their journeys, their teams were joined by almost 100 candidates, who heard the „honkers” and wanted to join in. During their flights, they saw sights they had never seen before and some said they flew so high that they swore they touched heaven.
I also continued to be amazed at the Tres Dias “honkers” who report at almost every Secuela about the awe-some flights to places called, “Kairos, Outside Kairos, Chrysalis, Journey and other destinations.” I look at them and I think “Wow, how do they do that! God must have given them a special gift.” And when you stop to think about it, that‟s right … God did give each of us a special gift. The Gift of eternal life with a heavenly father who loves us very much. Plus, the gift of the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.
As I wind down my journey this evening as your Lay Director, I wanted to personally thank each and every one of you for allowing me to fly with you the last 2 years. It‟s been awesome. I will leave you with this one thought. When I was a Rector, my theme was “Come Follow Me.” I think that‟s what the “Honkers” are really saying, “Come Follow Me and I‟ll take you to places you never dreamed possible.” When you hear a “honker”, it just might be Jesus talking to you.
Speaking on of someone who heard the call, I am pleased that Diane Anderson has accepted the call to serve as your Lay Director for the next two years. She and her husband Vince have been long time supporters of the Tres Dias Movement and their impact has been felt and loved throughout our entire community. Please join me in welcoming and affirm Diane as she steps in her new role as your Lay Director.
